Are you pregnant and suffering from back pain or sciatica?
Does this describe you?
Is the pain affecting your enjoyment of your pregnancy and making everyday life a struggle?
Are doing normal things like sitting, walking and getting dressed even harder than they already were?
Are you feeling exhausted during the day because the pain is disturbing your sleep?
Are you struggling to manage the pain but don't want to rely on painkillers?
Are you worried about it getting worse as your pregnancy progresses?
It is very common to experience back pain and sciatica during pregnancy. The good news is that just because you are pregnant, you don’t have to live with it.
Here at churchdown osteopaths we have been helping women such as yourself to have a pain free pregnancy for over 40 years. Many of our osteopaths have also done specialist further training in treating during pregnancy.
Why is back pain more common during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, your body goes through huge postural changes and adaptations, at the same time your ligaments and connective tissues are softening and changing. This can cause instability and put additional strain on your low back and pelvis and may exacerbate old problems from past injuries or traumas. However, it is not unusual for back pain to happen for the first time during pregnancy.
What is Sciatica?
In some cases, back pain may lead to Sciatica. This is pain along the sciatic nerve that can be anywhere from the buttock all the way down to the sole of the foot. It happens when the nerve gets irritated and inflamed and is commonly caused by:
Restrictions, strain or instability in the joints around your low back or pelvis
Muscle strain in the low back
Disc injury
Irritability of a muscle called the piriformis at the side of your pelvis.

Our Treatment programme
01
Comprehensive Consultation
We will discuss your problem in detail, finding out all about your symptoms, how long they have been going on as well as things such as your general health, lifestyle and past accidents and illnesses. This helps us to build an understanding not just of what your problem is, but more importantly why it may have happened and helps us to really get to the root cause of your problem.
02
Exceptional Hands on Treatment
Our Osteopaths all specialise in using hands on treatment using the cranial approach to osteopathy to release the tension and strain in your body to help relieve your discomfort. The cranial approach to osteopathy is used to treat the whole body, it is gentle and doesn't use manipulations (cracking of joints). It is ideally suited to treating during pregnancy.
03
Management during pregnancy
Your osteopath can help to advise you about things you can do to help manage your problem. This may include things such as advice on moderating activities, advising on stretches and other general management advice. They may also discuss how treatment may be able to help in preparing your body for giving birth.
04
Treatment after Birth
After giving birth, your body has to recover both from the changes it made during pregnancy but also the effects of delivery which can leave your pelvis pulled out of balance.
Not only are you then having to recover from the strains of pregnancy and birth, but in caring for your newborn, you are also doing a lot of the things like lifting, bending and sitting for long periods that may aggravate your sciatica. It is very common for you to also have other aches and pains during this time.
Here at churchdown osteopaths, we specialise in treating new mums post pregnancy to help get you back to feeling yourself as quickly as possible. In addition to our mother and baby programme, we also have Osteopaths specialising in the Mummy MOT.
